History of Saunas

The earliest Saunas were simply dug into an embankment in the ground, while later saunas were built above ground supported with wooden legs. Rocks would be heated in a stone stove with a wood fire until the rocks became extremely hot. This process took half a day in order to heat the room to a sufficiently high temperature, during which time the sauna was allowed to fill with smoke.

Once it reached working temperature and once the smoke had been cleared courtesy of the air vent, the bathers were then allowed to enter. The original Sauna was called savu (Finnish for smoke) sauna. Later the sauna evolved to incorporate a metal wood burning stove complete with chimney.

With the development of the electric sauna back in the 1950's, saunas became more accessible and since then their popularity has grown throughout the world. It is not the norm to find at hotels, gyms, and health clubs.

Zen Wellness offers a wide selection of infrared saunas to provide our guests with options in healing in a private & relaxing space. We offer the next generation, our Infrared Saunas penetrate the skin more deeply at lower, more comfortable temperatures (approx 110-140 degrees). This allows for longer, more relaxing sessions and a focus on deep detoxification rather than just surface heat.

Zen Wellness clients use our saunas for targeted benefits: pain relief, improved circulation, and mood enhancement. Book our First Visit offer to experience the full spectrum of modern wellness.
